The Auvergne

Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne
La Belle Etoile and Chambon-sur-Lac

Why not experience French life as a guest in our B&B home, plus French roads on your bikes with a cross country road trip to Chambon-sur-Lac in the spectacular Parc des Volcans d’Auvergne.

La Belle Etoile is a large farmhouse set in grounds of just over four acres located in the Deux-Sèvres region of Western France. We would like to share our experience of living here and offer a two night B&B short break, for up to six guests, combined with a three night two star hotel B&B stay in Chambon-sur-Lac in the Parc des Volcans d’Auvergne.

We will be exploring this region over two full ride out days; it’s all about the riding, the incredible roads in the Auvergne not forgetting the fabulous ride down through wonderful French countryside, towns and villages.

You’ll make your own way down for arrival at La Belle Etoile on Day One Sunday afternoon or early evening, we will supply you the most interesting but progressive enough route depending on your arrival port, which we recommend is Caen. As a Brittany Ferries Trade Partner, MSL Tours can make the channel crossing booking on your behalf, if required and subject to availability.

On arrival we’ll greet you with a cold beer and a complimentary home cooked three course meal, with a glass or two of wine produced locally in the Loire Valley. You’ll have plenty of time to relax in the peaceful courtyard, listen to the swallows chirping and marvel at their flying skills as you enjoy a post dinner glass or beer, reflecting on your ride down to La Belle Etoile with fellow guests, perfect!

On Day Two Monday after a good breakfast, we’ll make an early departure for Chambon-sur-Lac in the Massif du Sancy in the Auvergne, forty miles southwest of Clermont-Ferrand. Riding distance is approximately two hundred miles across country with plenty of coffee stops, lunch and Over the next three nights you’ll enjoy the B&B comfort of our two star Tour hotel with rooms having a view of Lake Chambon, single rooms enjoy the benefit of a small balcony. The hotel also offers free parking with optional secure garaging for the bikes for a small charge. We will be eating out locally each evening with breakfast included at the hotel.

Over the next two days we will make the most of our time by riding the fabulous roads around the Massif du Sancy in the Parc des Volcans d’Auvergne. ‘To say that there’s good riding in the Massif Central – the huge range of low mountains, high hills and dormant volcanoes in the heart of France – is to undersell the attraction of the region. For one thing, it’s huge so there are miles of amazing roads to explore; for another, it’s quiet, especially as you get further from the beaten track.’ Ride Magazine 2017.

Day Five Thursday will see us riding back across country to La Belle Etoile for the last night and we’ll stop for a good ‘menu de jour’ lunch on the way back. If we have time then we’ll visit Oradour-sur-Glane, the ruins of this village left as a permanent memorial destroyed by the Germans in June 1944.

Day Six Friday is departure day after a substantial breakfast, continental or cooked to set you up for your days ride on the bike. However if you would like to stay longer or arrive sooner then you would be welcome to book a few more nights as our B&B guest!

We will be out for up to 6 – 8 hours each day, covering around 150 -200 miles on the bikes, depending on our stops along the way with plenty of time for coffee breaks and lunch. A great opportunity therefore to experience and explore these regions of France, staying in  relaxed and informal settings at La Belle Etoile  and Chambon-sur-Lac with a small group of like-minded biking guests!
