The rally is now in its 22nd year is one of the oldest and best-known events in Spain’s bike calendar. It is open to pre 1980 motorcycles although organisers welcome modern machines but not as part of the rally. Riders of these machines are free to follow the routes providing they don’t get in the way of the older participating bikes and remember the convention that ‘steam gives way to sail’.
The hub of the rally is in a small coastal town of Colombres on the borders of Asturias and Cantabria and whose arena is the wonderful Picos de Europa a wild, rugged mountainous region that boasts some of the most natural scenery in the whole of Europe. The roads through the regions are pretty exciting as well.
Colombres is not just a rally but also a combination of events. It’s an International meeting with over 650 entries last year. It’s a hill climb for the Spanish National Championship, not for money or prizes but just for the fun of racing on the public roads. There’s an auto jumble and motorcycle exhibition if you choose not to ride. The main event of course is the rally of 5,000 curves through the foothills of the Picos de Europa. The route is all on good tarmac roads. Entrants are expected to complete two laps of the course starting and finishing in Colombres.
